TMW ARTS TALLINN TUESDAY ON MARCH 28

TMW Arts, organized by Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC), hosts a gallery evening with a special programme and extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday on March 28 from 17.00 to 21.00.

The gallery evening is a wonderful opportunity to familiarize yourself with Estonian art gallery landscape – we’ll visit both newcomers and the old greats, while also meeting the gallery owners and artists. This year’s exhibition programme includes projects from both Estonian and international artists, group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. During Tallinn Tuesday you can attend an exhibition opening at Okapi Gallery, visit Haus Gallery for the last day of the exhibition and enjoy international solo and group exhibitions at EKA, Vaal and Temnikova & Kasela Galleries.

Exhibition “Tricolor Games” by Mall Nukke (21.02-28.03)

Tallinn Tuesday is also the last day of National Romantic exhibition “Tricolor Games” by pop artist Mall Nukke at Haus Gallery. “I’ve been doing paintings connected to Estonia and Estonianness throughout my career as an artist. This exhibition shows my flag-coloured works from 2014 to 2017, which were inspired by the meanings behind the Estonian tricolour. The paintings depict games with tricolour marbles, tangled up fabrics and black latex costumes. The blue of the European Union and the colours of the Euro also bring some variety to the colour gamut,“ says the artist, explaining the theme of the exhibition.

 

18:00 Okapi Gallery (Niguliste 2)

Audio-visual performance “Via Baltic” by Niña Yhared

Okapi Gallery will present Mexico-born artist Niña Yhared’s performance project “Via Baltic“. Residing in Vilnius, Lithuania, Yhared focuses her work on the almost 30-year-old citizen initiative demonstration, the Baltic Way, raising questions about nationality, freedom and borders in her performance.

19:00 EKA Gallery (Vabaduse väljak 4)

Exhibition by OGH (Paige Früchtnicht and Greg Ponchak) (09.03–01.04)

OGH is a joint project by Greg Ponchak and Paige Früchnicht, which combines fashion, art, design, curation and architecture. In the context of the exhibition at EKA Gallery, OGH explores the expressions of political action and militarization that are influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition and Neoplatonic Christian Asceticism.

20:00 Temnikova & Kasela Gallery (Lastekodu 1)

Group exhibition “Euroopamaa” curated by Oleg Frolov (18.03-06.05)

“Euroopamaa” is an international group exhibition, which brings together different generations of artists from Tallinn, Moscow, Berlin and Vienna. Their works have common interest in exploring the relationships between society and physical space and attempt to make sense of those relationships. The exhibition showcases the works of seven different artists and shows how their works complement each other. The artists participating at the exhibition are Ekaterina Borsuk, Oleg Frolov, Leopold Kessler, Klara Liden, Juhan Soomets, Denis Stroev and Tõnis Vint.

Exhibition “Pink Tree” by Laurentsius (16.03-08.04)

The tour ends at Vaal Gallery, where you can see the exhibition by Laurentsius (Lauri Sillak) a fetishistic aesthete, approaching his subjects with extreme devotion. For this exhibition, Laurentsius has taken on a challenge to paint landscapes, which is demonstrated through his larger-than-life paintings in this forgotten genre. Bourgeoisie and decadence, kitsch and personality create a unique exhibition experience that elegantly straddles the line between good and bad taste. Laurentsius (born Lauri Sillak in 1969) is an Estonian painter, whose work combines academic and pop-art by fusing excellent painting techniques and detailed surfaces with industrial aesthetics.

 

TMW Arts Studio Tours

On Friday, March 31st a special studio tour of three contemporary artists takes place. The incentive for the tour originates from the interview book “Artist spaces” (“Kunstnike ruumid”) by Merilin Talumaa and Annika Tootsi, which was published in early 2017 and details the visits to 16 different studios, including Kristi Kongi’s and Jaanus Samma’s studios. The specifics of each studio bring out the versatility of the practices of a modern artist and give participants a unique chance to observe their work process. Register here for the tour.

On Saturday, April 1st the ARS building hosts a Creative Saturday, an event organized by The Estonian Artists’ Association during which you can have a closer look at the creative processes and spaces of the artists and designers working in the ARS building (Pärnu mnt 154, Tallinn). On April 1st, we will visit the studios of artists who work predominantly with sound.

NOAR.eu Future Talents and the Crowd Favourite Election

For a second year, TMW Arts hosts a joint event by NOAR.eu art environment and Estonian Academy of Arts to introduce the future talents of Estonian art to a wider audience and conduct an online voting campaign to elect the crowd favourite. The audience can vote during TMW and a selection of works from the competition will be displayed at Wabadus café.
